University of Cincinnati Honors Program
My Experience in the Learning Commons
In my on-campus coop during the spring semester of 2023, I served as a learning assistant, content creator, and content review leader in the learning commons. The learning commons is a great resource that students at the University of Cincinnati have access to in order to help them better understand concepts in their more difficult courses. The course I supported was CHEM 1031 where I had the opportunity to facilitate student learning in lecture by assisting the professor to further guide the students through active learning and aid them in achieving success in the course.
Outside of the main lecture I held the role as the content creator and content review leader. I created weekly lesson plans and lead content review sessions of the weekly lecture material for the allied health students. Through this experience, I learned that all students have a different learning style, and that it is important to integrate a variety of study strategies when teaching a group of students.
Facilitating the learning of my students helped me understand which study strategies work best for myself as well. In this position, I grew greatly in my confidence as a leader and my passion for serving as a mentor for students flourished as well. My experience in the learning commons was impactful and I am excited to return for future semesters and make a greater impact on the incoming class.
I dedicated time out of each of week to create a lesson plan that the other learning assistants would be able to utilize within their content review sessions with their students.

The time and attention to detail that went into my lesson plans were important because I wanted to make sure that the students would be able to understood the concepts of the previous week to the best of the their ability.
I also knew that it would be important to create cohesive documents and folders that the learning assistants would be able to follow for their review sessions.
